New Visions: The Architecture of the In-Betweens

I have had the privilege of watching David Stahl’s work evolve over the years, but his latest series feels like a breakthrough (yes, another one!) into a whole new dimensional layer. There is a tactile energy here that you just can not look away from.

David has been working with an industrial hot glue gun as a fabrication tool for many years, but not just to hold things together. He uses it to create a “web” of connective tissue that makes these pieces feel less like objects and more like living, breathing organisms. There is a ceaseless motion to each piece, they vibrate and pulse.

A Tour Through the New Series

“Shades of Blue”, 2026 – This one feels like a deep breath. David has taken these deep blue spheres and packed them into a frame, but the magic is in the “silk” between them. It feels like a cool moment frozen in time, like a cluster of berries caught in a morning frost. The piece is dense, mysterious, and beautifully contained.

“Avian Haven”, 2026 – David takes us vertical here. By stacking these shimmering star forms, he has created a free-standing 3D structure that feels like a celestial birdhouse. It has a wonderful rhythmic quality to it. You can see the hand-made nature of the piece in every star, reminding us that art is, at its heart, a labor of process and love.

“Mighty Fortress”, 2026 – This is where things get architectural. The deep purples and blacks give it a regal, almost “sci-fi” monument vibe. It looks like a city from a distant planet or a forgotten fortress. The way the glue bridges the gaps between the towers makes it feel like the structure is still growing and acsending, weaving itself into existence right before our eyes.

“Island Vibes” 2026 – If Mighty Fortress is a skyscraper, this is the landscape surrounding it. It is expansive and topographical, with those warm bronze and copper tones making it look like a map that has come to life. It is the kind of piece you want to fly a tiny drone over just to explore all the nooks and crannies David has built into it.

What I love most about these four works is how they talk to each other. They move from the quiet, boxed-in energy of Shades of Blue to the sprawling, adventurous world of Island Vibes.

David is reminding us that even the most “industrial” tools, like a hot glue gun can create something incredibly delicate and complex when guided by the right vision. These aren’t just assemblies, they are worlds that expand the imagination!
